Kaoru Supreme: An Organic Matcha Review

It’s spring. Hopefully. I mean it is, isn’t it?

With the temperature still hovering around the freezing mark and snow still being a possibility, I have my fingers crossed.

But either way, recently the weather was nice enough to sit outside in the midday sun. I figured it would be a great opportunity to take some pictures and begin a review for Kaoru Supreme. 😀

Background

Karou Supreme is a matcha sold by O-Cha.com. Grown in Kirishima at the southern tip of Japan, this matcha is JAS and USDA certified organic. In addition to being organic, the vendor states that it’s one of the few green teas to be certified as Kosher.

Canister of O-Cha.com's Kaoru Supreme

The 30 gram canister is resealable and conveniently wider than most matcha tins I have encountered. This is helpful because it makes scooping directly out of the canister easy.

The powder is a medium shade of green. Very fine in texture, this matcha (like most matcha) benefits greatly from sifting.

Brewing Kaoru Supreme

Kaoru Supreme is usucha, the thin type of matcha. There is no specific trick to brewing it. Using the technique outlined in our Matcha Tutorial will give excellent results.

However, in short the brewing instructions are:

  1. Preheat and dry your teabowl.
  2. Place two chashaku scoops (approximately 2 grams) of matcha into the bowl.
  3. Add 70ml of ~85C(185F) water.
  4. Whisk vigorously.
  5. Enjoy! 🙂

Thoughts and Observations

The quality of this organic matcha is very apparent. It’s easy to whisk up dense foam. The texture is smooth with a controlled level of bitterness.

I don’t find there is much sweetness in this tea — it’s more green and vegetal tasting. Even so, it’s a flavour profile that’s quite delicious and pleasant.

Final Thoughts

Kaoru Supreme is an entertaining matcha that is sure to delight. It’s slightly on the expensive side, but if organics are your thing, you really can’t ask for anything better. Sweeter inexpensive matcha options may be better suited for beginners, but whether you’re a casual matcha drinker or a fanatic, you won’t be disappointed with Kaoru Supreme. 🙂
